Researcher (agricultural economics, international profile) 2019-07-BW

At the Institute of Farm Economics of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal German Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fishery two positions are available at the earliest possible date until 31.12.2021 (probably with an option for extension to a maximum of 3 years) as

(agricultural economics, international profile)

for the research project „Impact of meat and milk product exports on developing countries (IMMPEX)“. One position will be dedicated to poultry (and possibly pig), the other position will be dedicated to dairy.

Ghana is one of the two countries of investigation, the second is to be confirmed at the beginning of the project (probably Senegal, Ivory Coast or Cameroon).


  • Identification of the most important regions and typical production systems in the study countries and for the products poultry meat, milk and, if applicable, pork
  • Data collection of typical production systems and farms in the study regions and analysis of their performance, economics and income contributions
  • Analysis of the organisation, infrastructure and logistics of the value chain, including domestic and imported products
  • Identification, specification and quantification of the productivity and efficiency reserves of the local systems in order to reduce the differences to the European competitors
  • Preparation of reports, presentations and academic publications

Your specialist profile:

  • University graduate (Univ.-Dipl./M. Sc.) in agricultural science (specialising in agricultural economics or agribusiness or the business or social science of agriculture)
  • Knowledge of livestock farming production systems and contexts, in particular poultry/pig and/or dairy
  • Experience of the economic analysis of farms and farming systems
  • Experience of multi-cultural team work is desired

Your personal characteristics:

  • Creativity and interest in exploring new topics
  • Ability to analyse complex contexts, focused working style, critical judgement
  • High degree of motivation, independent initiative and talent for organisation as well as good time management
  • Ability to present topics clearly and comprehensively in orally and in writing for different target groups
  • Very good English language skills, knowledge of German language is advantageous
  • Working experience in West and Subsahara Africa desired
  • Willingness and ability to travel in Germany and abroad (driving licence and willingness to fly), in conjunction with high flexibility
