The Institute of Biodiversity at the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, seeks to appoint a

scientist to a researcher position

in the area of ‘biodiversity, ecosystem services and environmental performance of legume-based cropping systems’.

The term of the position is 30 month, starting at the earliest possible date. It is a part-time position with 19.5 hours per week (50 %).

The position is within the EU Horizon 2020 project ‘Legumes Translated - Translating knowledge for legume-based farming for feed and food systems’. The overall goal of Legumes Translated is to support innovation in grain legume-supported cropping systems and value-chains by linking sources and users of quality-assured knowledge using rigorous knowledge synthesis and compilation. A major feature of the project is international collaboration between research organisations and organisations that are focused on innovation in cropping systems. Within the Thünen Institute, the project will be conducted in close cooperation with the Institute of Agricultural Technology.

Job description:

  • Compile existing knowledge (literature, data bases) on biodiversity, ecosystem services and environmental performance of legume-based cropping systems
  • Develop an assessment framework/tool for environmental performance and ecosystem service(ESS) provision of legume-based cropping and farming systems (individual crops, cropping and farming system level)
  • Liaise with Actor Groups and Thematic Networks within Legumes Translated to compile knowledge on innovative cropping systems and value chains
  • Life cycle assessment of legume-based cropping systems
  • Identify constraints that impact on crop environmental and ESS performance of legume-based cropping systems
  • Support expert guidance to the identification of options to improve ecosystem service delivery of legume-based cropping systems
  • Provide expert support to the synthesis of knowledge
  • Report findings in Development Guides and contribute to Practice Abstracts
  • Publishing and presenting results in international and national scientific journals and at conferences

Your profile:

  • University degree (M.Sc., Univ.-Diploma) in landscape ecology, agroecology, environmental science, geoecology or closely related fields
  • A PhD (or equivalent) in one of those fields would be desirable
  • Interest in agricultural and environmental topics and good understanding of agroecosystems and farming systems
  • Experience in life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology
  • Experience in the integrated environmental assessment of cropping system
  • Experience in statistical data analyses, in particular with R
  • Solid knowledge of the ESS concept and ESS classification systems (e.g Common Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES))
  • Principal understanding of effects of cultivation practices on biodiversity, pollination, biocontrol and soil fertility
  • Ability to work independently and strong capacity for interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Candidates should be fluent in English (written and spoken)
