Scientist (m/f) for Costs and benefits of measures for the restoration of forest land-use potentials and ecosystem services in Africa

The Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics) of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, invites applications for a

Scientist (m/f) for

Costs and benefits of measures for the restoration of forest land-use potentials and ecosystem services in Africa

The position is limited to a fixed term of five (5) years and is to be filled as soon as possible.

Deforestation and degradation of forest sites in the tropics often have negative impact on the provision of ecosystem services for different land user groups. They also represent the main source of greenhouse gases in the field of land use and land use change. Thünen’s research goal is the comprehensive analysis of options and restrictions of forest restoration and a development of best-practice concepts for one or more regions in Africa. Within this project, different silvicultural options for restoration of use potentials and ecosystem services shall be identified, analyzed and classified according to cost-benefit-criteria in comparison of different land user groups. The work shall be carried out in close cooperation with the Thünen Institute of Forest Ecosystems.

Therefore, we are seeking for a

Researcher (m/f) in forestry sciences or a graduate from related disciplines, preferably with specialization in tropical forest management in Africa

Tasks:

  • Identification of „Business-as-Usual-Practices” for restoration of forest related ecosystem services as well as „Best-Management-Practices“ based on literature reviews and analysis of geographical databases as basis for Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) in Africa
  • Scoping trips to possible target countries in Africa to assess local experiences from science and practice as well as implementation of a feasibility study for a subsequent systematic empirical study on the ground
  • Draft a project proposal for this study in cooperation with scientists from Thünen Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics and Thünen Institute of Forest Ecosystems and, where appropriate, with other possible project partners to prioritize FLR-procedures under consideration of the biophysical and socio-economical context
  • Supervision of fieldwork and assignment of subcontracts, such as
    • Collection of plot-based forestry and agroforestry data
    • Evaluation of cost structures of alternative land use types
    • Carrying out of key informant interviews, focus group discussions or other socio-empirical methods in relation to the socio-economic and governance context
  • Selection and implementation of appropriate cost-benefit-analyses for different land-user groups and ecosystem services as well as transfer and extension of the method spectrum of cost-benefit analyses to the African context using geodata
  • Publications in international journals and policy briefs
  • Preparation of a follow-up project for the development of an engineering approach and, if necessary, for the development of demonstration-plots in one or more African countries for long-term policy advice in the field of FLR
  • Know-how-transfer from interdisciplinary projects to the international science-policy dialogue
  • Writing of scientific and user-oriented project applications with international project partners
  • Preparation of statements and reports for national and international boards

Requirements:

  • University degree (diploma/M.Sc.) in Forestry or a degree in related subjects, preferably with focus on tropical forest management
  • PhD. desired
  • Profound knowledge in silviculture, agroforestry in Africa
  • Theoretical experiences and profound knowledge of methods of cost-benefit-analyses, dealing with geo data, knowledge of socio-empirical methods
  • Willingness and capacity to familiarize with new scientific methods
  • Very good competence in statistical evaluation procedures
  • Work experience in Africa, willingness and ability to do field work in Africa (tropical suitability), even in remote areas
  • Openness, creativity and high motivation in taking over new tasks
  • Very good command of English (verbal and written), basic German as well as French knowledge would be an asset
