Biological effects of contaminants

If you perform a classical chemical analysis, you will know the names of the substances and their concentration in the fish afterwards. What you will not know is the toxic effect of the substances and their potential risk for the organism.

Therefore we investigate the effects of relevant chemicals in biological test systems. With zebafish embryos we can test different kinds of impact and can calculate threshold values.

For our monitoring programme we evaluate the frequency of DNA micronuclei in the cells of fish blood as well as the stability of leucocytes.

We look at the activity of metabolism enzymes and the concentration of metallothioneine in fish. We want to reveal and to quantify a possible effect of contaminants on the fish's detoxification systeme.
