selection of drought tolerant Robinia pseudoacaia from international sources for energy production
Future prospects for wide regions in East Germany lets expect a reduction in precipitation and prolonged spells of drought during the vegetation period. To ensure beneficial biomass production in such permanent cultures, the provision of suitable plant material is crucial.
Aim of the project is the selection of genotypes of black locus (Robinia pseudoacacia L.), suitable for the production of woody biomass on dry sites in Germany.
Out of the progenies of 56 international seed sources potentially suitable genotypes are selected by analyzing yield determining processes in their dynamics after applying drought stress. Among them are the patterns of 14C and 15N distribution basing among the plant compartments leaf, root, and shoot in connection with the fluctuating starch pool as well as physiological measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence and water use efficiency. Complementary, the yield potential will be estimated by establishing growth curves. Prospective genotypes will be cloned and out planted on a permanent field test.
