Importance of soil organic matter for microbial diversity

Organic matter is an important structural element of soils. How important is it to maintain a functioning microbial community and support microbial diversity? What happens in soils which loose organic matter e.g. as a result of (inappropriate) agricultural management or climate change? To answer these questions, we investigate and compare the microbial diversity in soils with different contents of organic matter.

Information on one of our research projects on the importance of soil organic matter in context of Schwerpunktprogramm SPP1315 of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) can be found at Biogeochemical Interfaces in Soil.
