Before genetically engineered plants are introduced to agricultural practice the ecological risks should be known. Such risks cannot always be simply extrapolated from cultivation experiences in other countries but instead require an assessment of ecological interactions under the specific conditions in Germany. In context of field studies, we analyze the effects of genetically engineered plants on soils and soil microorganisms and utilize highly sensitive molecular detection techniques, e.g. ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay), quantitative PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and high throughput DNA sequencing technologies.
