1st Expert Workshop of the research project "Biodegradable Biobased Plastics - Recommended Practices for Appropriate Use (BBKH)"

New

How do biodegradable bio-based plastics (BBKs) behave in different habitats and where are they found? What are the legal conditions? How sustainable are BBK products and what should be considered in product design? These and other key questions were discussed in an expert workshop of the BBKH project by the participants from industry, associations and science on 23.11.2018 at the Institute of Agricultural Technology.

For the project, a literature study was conducted on the occurrence and behavior of BBK in the environment. These and other project results were presented in the workshop. Discussion points here were also the different terminology for degradability. Within the main topics, two keynote lectures were also held. Marcel Görmer from the Department of Sustainable Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin gave a lecture on the "Ecological Assessment of Bio-based Materials - Harmonization Requirements and Pitfalls". About polylactic acid (PLA) Service packaging and challenges for PLA were reported by Bernhard Kesseler, plant manager of packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki Oyj.

The EU proposal for a directive "Reducing the impact of certain plastic products on the environment" of 28.05.2018 was the main topic of discussion. A second workshop on standards, product labeling and communication along the value chain will take place in May 2019.
