Agricultural Soil Inventory (BZE-LW)

Aims of the BZE-LW

With the ratification of the Unites Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Germany has committed to report anthropogenic sources and sinks of greenhouse gases as well as stocks of soil organic carbon and of biomass (UNFCCC Art. 3.3, 4.1, 4.2 and decision 3/CP5.). However, there is no up-to-date and consistent data set of the content of organic carbon in agricultural soils in Germany. With the German Agriculture Soil Inventory, a consistent and representative inventory of the organic carbon stocks in the top 100 cm of agricultural soils is conducted for the first time.

Our aims in short

  • improving of the emission report for the Unites Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
  • determination of organic carbon stocks in agricultural soils
  • understanding the influence of climate, land use, agricultural management and soil properties on soil organic carbon stocks
  • predicting the impact of climate change on the soil organic carbon stocks
