The international PhD training programme aims to give additional support to the PhD students at the Thünen-AK to develop their research skills, as well as transferrable skills, and improve their opportunities for scientific networking. “Peer-to-peer” support is an important component of the programme.
Some parts of the PhD training programme are also open to other staff.
To initiate our programme, an online questionnaire was used in October 2018 to collect specific training needs and offers from those staff members at Thünen-AK willing to teach courses or workshop trainings. The results of the survey were used as the basis of this concept, and the survey will be annually repeated to collect new ideas and review the concept.
Due to the increasing number of international PhD students, funded by the DAAD and other projects, the programme will be mainly run in English. However, there are various additional courses and training opportunities open to all staff at the Thünen Institute – more information (in German) is available via the Thünen intranet.
The Thünen-AK PhD programme consists of different components:
|Statistics with R||Course (by Roland Fuss)|
|Scientific writing||Course (by Axel Don)|
|Data visualization||Course (by external consultants)|
|PhD meetings||Regular meetings with peer-to-peer support & training according to needs, especially in “soft skills” such as time and project management (Mari Bieri)|
|Other courses & workshops (Data cleaning, analysis, visualization, hands-on field experiments, and more)||Varied (by Thünen-AK staff)|
None of the components of the programme are mandatory, however supervisors are strongly encouraged to support their PhD students participation.
Certificates will be issued to those who complete the requirements of each training course. These certificates can be used in partial fulfilment of most doctoral programmes (depending of the specific regulations of each university). For more information, contact Mari Bieri (mari.bieri@thuenende).
