The Thünen Institute develops scientifically based decision-making aids for politics and conducts research across disciplines with the aim of sustainable development of agriculture, forestry, timber, and fisheries. The Center for Information Management is the central service provider for the required central IT and library service and is involved in the development of the National Research Data Infrastructure, as well as in joint projects on open science. Within the Center for Information Management, we are establishing a permanent service unit for research data management, consisting of a team of interdisciplinary specialists.

To strengthen this team, we are looking for the following permanent position at the Braunschweig facility a research assistant as

a database specialist (f/m/d)

(Master; Univ.-Diploma)

You will strengthen a dedicated team consisting of a research data manager, a research software engineer, a geodata specialist, and another research data manager in the future. As a team, you will support the scientists of the Thünen Institute in all areas of research data management. Furthermore, you will be involved in a wide range of research and monitoring projects of national importance. You will design and implement data management solutions together with the team

Your tasks with us:

  • Together with your colleagues, you will centrally design the technical and organizational restructuring of research data management and take the lead in integrating various project databases into a long-term research data infrastructure
  • You will develop workflows to automate data checks, data integration steps, and other routines
  • You will advise and support researchers in various areas of database management, such as database software, migration of data and DBM, as well as access rights management
  • You will perform administrative tasks on systems within your area of responsibility and be accountable for monitoring database performance, security, and critical processes
  • You will develop, organize and lead internal and external events in the field of RDM in a team with colleagues from the service center
  • You will be involved in the preparation of grant proposals, scientific publications, attendance of conferences and lectures

Professionally, we desire from you:

  • You have successfully completed a university degree (M.Sc.) in the field of computer science or have completed a university degree in the natural sciences (M.Sc.) and have relevant experience in the field of database management
  • You have relevant (practical) experience in the design and conception of databases (object-relational, graph-database), including the documentation, administration, and operation of them
  • You have relevant experience in the transformation and integration of data
  • You have programming skills, both in database-native and scripting languages (PSQL, Python, Shell, or similar)
  • You have experience in the usage and administration of Linux systems
  • You preferably have experience in interdisciplinary project work, as well as in the planning and execution of training courses or consulting services

Personally, you bring:

  • You are proactive, enthusiastic, communicative and enjoy working in a relatively new work area supporting scientific research
  • You have strong skills in communicating knowledge, and you are not afraid to pass this on in form of training and consulting services
  • You are service and result oriented, know how to network, and you are a team player
  • Secure active and passive knowledge of English and basic knowledge of German (A2 or higher)
  • A car driver's license is desirable
  • Willingness to travel (national/international)

Part-time employment is generally possible.

The employment is governed by the Wage Agreement for Public Services (TVöD-Bund). If the personal requirements are met, the payment of remuneration is carried out according to tariff-category 13 TVöD.
