In close collaboration, the Finnish Institute for Verification of the Chemical Weapons Convention (VERIFIN) and Thünen Institute of Fisheries Ecology performed in vitro experiments with fish liver homogenates and several CWA-related compounds. These activities are related to the research project DAIMON.
Fish liver homogenates are used to investigate metabolism of CWA-related compounds in fish under controlled conditions in the lab. After a certain exposure time metabolism is stopped and the samples are prepared for analysis performed by high resolution mass spectrometer. Due to lack of information regarding possible metabolites of CWA’s in fish this method offers the possibility to search for unknown metabolites.
Results so far indicate that most of the studied CWA-related compounds form glutathione conjugates. In order to be able to develop sensitive analysis methods for arsenic containing CWA metabolites, it is important to know how these chemicals are metabolised in fish after uptake.
