Development of innovative and non-invasive monitoring systems for fisheries research (AutoMAt)

The objective of the joint AutoMAt project is to either replace, complement or modernize part of the conventional data collection and analysis procedures in the fields of fisheries biology and ecology through inventing and implementing alternative, automated systems.

Background and Objective

The objective of the joint AutoMAt project is to either replace, complement or modernize part of the conventional data collection and analysis procedures in the fields of fisheries biology and ecology through inventing and implementing alternative, automated systems. This is flanked by using modern sensor and electro-technology as well as innovative software solutions. To adaquately reflect the multidimensionalilty of the politically desired ecosystem approach the modernisation process will be simultaneously performed on different levels (in-water, on-ship, on-land). This approach is represented by the structure of the joint project which is divided into 4 subprojects. Subproject 1 addresses the non-invasive recording of fish and other marine organisms in their ambient environment which forms the basis for a reliable stock assessment and fishery management. Subproject 2 seeks to realize the automated, extensive collection of all fish caught and brought onboard of fishery vessels which is essential for any accurate appraisal of the catch by the fishery and at the same time increases the incentive to avoid (reduce) discarding. Subproject 3 addresses the fish on land in order to improve tracing back the fish and to improve the transparency for the consumer, the trade and the authorities.Subproject 4 addresses aspects of behavioural biology and physiology that can help to improve our general knowledge about eel behaviour and its geographical distribution.
