Combination of offshore wind farms and marine aquaculture in the North sea - a realistic scenario?



Offshore Site Selection for a sustainable and multi-functional use of marine areas in heavily utilized seas with the North Sea as an example

The future establishment of aquaculture systems in offshore wind farm areas requires a thorough evaluation of the environmental impacts, economic feasibility and legal aspects.

Background and Objective

The overarching goal of this joint project is to develop criteria for the site selection for offshore aquaculture systems in combination with offshore wind farms. Several institutes are involved, each of them addressing this venture from a different perspective, for example by focusing on ecological, economic, and juridical aspects. TI-FI will work on biological parameters in order to establish a balance between nutrient import via feed and nutrient export via harvest of cultured fish, mollusks and sea weeds in an integrated multitrophic aquaculture system (IMTA). 

Approach

The literature will be screened for species that reliably indicate anthropogenic influences. Laboratory feeding trials will be conducted to estimate nutrient flow via stable isotopes.

Identification of indicator species in the Zoobenthos;

Laboratory feeding trials to estimate nutrient flow via stable isotopes of Carbon and Nitrogene;

Modeling of nutrient flow in an integrated multitrophic aquaculture system (IMTA)
