What do women in rural areas require of their regional environment? What opportunities do they perceive, where do they feel limits in their regional environment? These are the questions following the research project on the living situations of women in rural areas concluded in 2006, in order to determine important basic requirements of rural development with particular consideration of the contribution of women.

Background and Objective

The goal of our project was to illustrate the living situation of women between the ages of 18 and 65 years in rural areas. For this purpose 1168 women in this age group were interviewed on 15 different survey topics about their living situations and asked about their perspective on rural development paths. The study points, randomly selected according to the principle of stratification, represent the diversity of normality in rural areas and range throughout the federal states in the Federal Republic of Germany. With a standardized questionnaire, the women, who were selected from the registry offices, were asked in face to face interviews about their education, employment, social situation and family status. Validation discussions for each of the study points with men and women served to test the reliability of the survey results.

Approach

In the study 1168 women between 18 and 65 could be interviewed on 15 topics. The topics represent the diversity of normality in rural areas and range throughout all states in the Federal Republic of Germany. Validation discussions with men and women on each topic of the study served to test the reliability of the results of the survey.

Results

The living situations of women in rural areas differ greatly between the different locations for every study point. Social differences were found above all in terms of educational achievements and the finances, over which women dispose,– both were determined to a great level by the outset situations and the room the women have to manoeuver. Despite all differences the surveyed women were all bound by a common priority for employment and with simultaneously strong involvement in family life. For the resulting need to reconcile work and family, those surveyed develop individual and very creative solutions as “Masters of their own Lives.”
