Consumer and Society

 (c) BLE/D. Menzler, M. Welling

“Industrial fishing ruthlessly exploits the oceans!” “Pesticides in vegetables, antibiotics in animal husbandry - modern agriculture is only about profit maximization!” “Cut down trees? No, thank you!” Many people completely reject modern production systems but do not adjust their own consumption habits and call for stricter production requirements, instead. How is industry and how are policymakers supposed to deal with this?

Large parts of society have scarcely any longer contact with agriculture, forestry and fisheries in practice. People’s image of farmers, fishermen or foresters is based on nostalgic ideas, romantic television series or product packages which are often far from reality or even intentionally misleading. Many people are in favour of untouched nature and are critical about the results of today's production methods. However, with their price-oriented behaviour, consumers often support exactly those economic practices which immediately should be put an end to by policy makers.

The gap between what people say and do has often been stated. Simple surveys do not help us here. We aim at getting scientifically to the bottom of this dilemma. We analyze the perception, assessment and attitudes of society with regard to agriculture, forestry and fisheries and their products. Questions such as how individual groups in the population form their opinions and how attitudes change when the information base is improved are of particular interest to us. In this context we involve the producers as part of society because they, too, have wide-ranging professional and individual demands.

On this journey we aim at identifying conscious and unconscious values and at better understanding the links between individual attitudes and specific patterns of behaviour. Important questions for us are:

  • How do people evaluate the different conditions of fields, forests and seas?
  • What expectations do people have of fisheries, agriculture, forestry and their products?
  • Which aspects are particularly important to them, which ones are less important, and how do they deal with conflicting goals?
  • What are the consequences of these assessments for research, industry and policy makers?
  • What is the impact of offered information and how would people - as citizens and as consumers - like to be informed?
  • When and to what extent do customers align their consumption with their attitudes, when don’t they and what are the reasons?

We are developing and improving the necessary methods also in collaboration with experts from social, communication and market research. The results will serve as the basis for solutions which we will pass on to policy makers, industry, research and society. Our goal is to bring industry and society closer together in a structured dialogue and, in this way, to gradually reduce the gap between social expectations and economic reality.

Labels, logos, signs: how do consumers stay informed?
The number of labels, logos and signs at the point of sale is increasing. Producers, retailers and politicians expect consumers to understand and use all of this information in their purchasing decisions. But consumers feel challenged by the huge variety of information given.

Do we have a welfare friendly animal husbandry?
How can we measure whether animals feel well? What options exist to evaluate animal welfare in livestock farming? Which political measures are effective in achieving improvements?

Society's view of farm animal husbandry
What does today’s population criticise in modern livestock production? What expectations do they have? Detailed knowledge is necessary if we want to develop socially acceptable solutions.

What services do forests provide?
Forests provide diverse ecosystem services – they produce raw wood, protect drinking water, bind carbon and are recreational areas. All these services have an economic value even if there are no markets for them.
