Biological Diversity

Fields, forests and oceans are inhabited by a large and incalculable diversity of plants, animals and microorganisms which are indispensable for the functioning of these ecosystems. We make use of this diversity but at the same time we threaten it. How do these two things come together and how can we prevent further losses of biodiversity?

Overexploitation, loss of habitats, input of pollutant into ecosystems and climate change threaten biodiversity. If we intend to halt further losses of species diversity and to prevent the resulting consequences, i.e. to preserve biodiversity in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, we need policies in the agricultural, forestry and fisheries sectors that are oriented towards sustainability. With our research efforts and with sound scientific results we provide the basis and options for political action in the interests of biodiversity.

We still do not know enough about the many elements of biodiversity and, more particularly, about how they impact the functioning of our ecosystems. In a global and national context we strive for the identification and quantification of the interactions between biological characteristics, management methods and environmental factors in various ecosystems, to come up with projections and to make policy recommendations.

Many research institutes focus on terrestrial biodiversity and in particular topics we establish close links to them. The characteristics of our research are to be able to pursue research topics over longer time scales and to have the remit to anticipate policy measures and to accompany them scientifically. This is the reason why we focus our research on the development of valid and practicable indicator and monitoring systems. Our aims are to govern the process of "measuring biodiversity → assessment of biodiversity → policy measures for biodiversity".

We cover the following research areas:

  • We try to unravel the still many unknown elements and functions of microbiobial diversity in arable and forest soils. This includes the investigation of the impact of different management methods on soil organisms and their role in the matter and water balance.
  • At the landscape scale land use and land use intensity are in the focus of our biodiversity research - for instance within the framework of the production of bioenergy plants, the various forms of grassland utilization and the sustainable forest management. This kind of integrative research is the only way of assessing political, agricultural and environmental measures at large scales.
  • At the scales of farm and regions we investigate the efficacy and efficiency of individual policy instruments that are either already implemented or planned.
  • We investigate the impact of climate change on biodiversity issues and options of using genetic resources to adapt crops to climate change.
  • In oceans we preferentially measure and evaluate the impact of climate change and direct human intervention – i.e. fisheries, offshore wind parks, protected marine areas - on the diversity of aquatic organisms.
